Time for a day-trip, just an hour away to Sumter, SC. We went to visit Swan Lake Iris Gardens, home of thousands of Japanese Iris, as well as all eight species of swans. The area was once known as Greenswamp Plantation and now is maintained by the City of Sumer.
After checking in at the visitor center to pick up a guide to identifying swans, we walked around the lake. It’s a typical low country blackwater lake, with lots of cypress trees, including one with a great blue heron nest at the top.
At one end of the park, the lake is a regular cypress swamp - there's a nice boardwalk through that area.
There were plenty of irises in bloom…
And we did see swans, though they weren’t very cooperative subjects for photography…
